Spotlight: Sarah Brown of Two Blue Peas Owner Sarah Brown talks about her business, Two Blue Peas, that offers a selection of clothing, accessories, gear and gifts for babies up to 24 months. She carries wares from well-known brands and one-of-a-kind items. A lot of the merchandise is handmade out of the homes of other female entrepreneurs, or "mompreneurs,'' across the U.S. How did you get started and what were you doing prior to launching Two Blue Peas? "I ran in the ad agency race until I developed the courage to start something on my own. I don't have any little ones yet, but my life is full of them. I had become a real pro at pulling together the perfect baby shower gift, despite the lack of great baby gift sites out there. "I'm passionate about children, and I have a little geek in me that loves Web strategy and e-commerce as well. It just made sense." What are the biggest challenges that your business faces? "My biggest challenge is getting the word out about Two Blue Peas. Traditional advertising is expensive and hard to pull off with such a tight budget. I definitely spend the better part of my day reaching out to folks in more organic ways, like blogging and participating on mommy message boards." What is something special about your business? "What makes Two Blue Peas unique is the local boutique vibe in an on-line environment. I provide the level of customer care you would expect to find only at your favorite hometown shop, plus other services like creative gift sets, custom monogramming, stylish gift wrap, and a really fast turnaround on communications and orders. "Everything ships within 48 hours, and all orders over $100 ship free. I also now offer free delivery to the 37206 and 37216 ZIPs with code 'EASTPEAS' at checkout. I basically want to make it as easy and pleasant as possible for time-pressed moms to shop for baby goods." Why did you choose this location/neighborhood? "Since Two Blue Peas is an online boutique, I can (and do) run it from just about anywhere. My husband and I only recently moved to town and instantly fell in love with East Nashville. The people in the community have a lot going on, but family and supporting local business definitely seem to be high priority. This is the perfect spot for Two Blue Peas to call home." |
